California has suffered 40+ deaths and at least 14,000 homes have been destroyed. The Los Angles Times broke down those 14,000 homes into categories: "10,016 partial losses, 4,712 total losses, 3,200 auto losses, and 153 farm equipment losses," (Winton).

Under these laws, California briefly offers tax relief on homes with $10,000 worth of damage or if the house is ultimately gone. Along with these tax reliefs, California provides disaster support. "If homeowners defer their taxes and receive disaster relief, they will owe less money when the bill ultimately comes due," (Dillon).

California's raging fires can cause many problems for the residents residing within the state. Because these fires are common, the state of California has implemented relief taxes and other property protections. "Under Proposition 13, tearing down your old house and building a new one would normally result in a full reassessment of your property and therefore a higher tax bill," (Dillon). Because wildfires are considered a disaster, laws passed in California help homeowners keep their taxes at a low.
